Yokne'am Illit is its own city, separate from the older village next door, Yokne'am Moshava (מושבה, moshava, a village that began as a farming community). Government locality lists give the two places separate codes, 240 for Yokne'am Illit and 241 for the moshava, so check which one a listing or an address actually belongs to before you compare prices.
The city suits olim who want to live in Hebrew. In an older Nefesh B'Nefesh roundtable, English-speaking residents, including a family who moved there from Haifa in March 2013, said they chose Yokne'am Illit partly because there weren't many Anglos. In their view a large English-speaking group can become "a community within a community" and slow children's integration. That family's son was the only native English speaker in his school, and their boys, who arrived before first grade, went straight into Hebrew-speaking classes without an ulpan and picked up the language. If you'd rather have an established Anglo community around you, compare the options in our guide to Anglo communities in Israel.
The same residents described a small city with all the services you need, so you don't have to drive for every errand. They called it clean and well kept, with views at every turn, almost no traffic lights and real quiet, especially on Shabbat. A big Israeli folk-dancing group meets in the evenings at the Matnas (מתנ"ס, the community center). The school, kindergarten, clinic and bus-stop counts higher up this page show what the city has today. The high-tech park is the main draw for many working families; our page on buying rental property near the Yokne'am Illit high-tech park looks at that as an investment.
Nature on the doorstep
Ramat Menashe Park lies just behind the city, between Yokne'am and Kibbutz Galed. UNESCO recognized it as a biosphere reserve in June 2011, and KKL-JNF's 15 km Senin River bicycle trail links Upper Yokne'am to the park. Residents in the roundtable also named the short, kid-friendly loop in the Cyclamen Forest (Ya'ar HaRakafot), the Maayan El-Roi spring at Tzomet HaTishbi about a 10-minute drive away, Nahal HaShofet on the far side of the moshava, the beach at Hof Dor, and Zichron Ya'akov with the Ramat HaNadiv gardens and nature reserve.
