Ashdod for English-Speaking Olim

Ashdod had 229,173 residents at the end of 2023, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (provisional figure), which makes it Israel’s seventh-largest city. It was founded in 1955.

Where olim live. Nefesh B’Nefesh, which helps olim from North America and the UK, says the olim it works with who are 40 or older mostly live in the neighborhoods south of Sderot Yerushalayim, while younger olim live all over the city. It names Quarter 17 (רובע י״ז, Rova Yud Zayin) and the Marina as popular. That’s the organization’s own observation, not a count, so use it to decide where to start looking.

Health care. All four health funds (kupot cholim) serve the city. Assuta Ashdod is the city’s public hospital, and the private urgent-care chains Terem and Bikur Rofeh both have Ashdod centers. Ask your health fund which urgent-care center it works with before you need one.

Schools. As in other Israeli cities, you’ll find state secular (mamlachti), state religious (mamlachti dati) and Haredi schools. The school a child is assigned to usually depends on the home address, so check the options for a specific apartment with the municipality before you sign.

Getting around. Trains and buses link Ashdod’s neighborhoods and connect the city with Tel Aviv and the rest of the country. Journey times vary by service, so check the current Israel Railways timetable for the trip you’ll make. Our comparison of Ashdod and Ashkelon looks at the commute and prices in both cities.
