Afula for religious English-speaking olim
Afula, in the Jezreel Valley (עמק יזרעאל, Emek Yizre'el) in northern Israel, has a Haredi (חרדי, frum) community that grew a great deal over the decade to 2024, with an established English-speaking group. Nefesh B'Nefesh's community profile, last updated on 29 January 2024, describes a quiet, mid-sized city with an out-of-town feel, many schools and Torah institutions (mosdos), and housing that is more affordable than in many other Israeli cities. The transaction estimates and October 2026 asking prices higher up this page show what that means in shekels.
Where the frum community lives
Most frum families live in two neighborhoods close to each other: Givat HaMoreh and Afula Illit, which are linked by an eruv. In 2024 Afula Illit had the larger Anglo group, including many olim who had moved there in recent years. Afula as a whole is religiously mixed, from traditional to Haredi and everything in between. Homes across Afula range from apartments and duplexes to semi-detached and detached houses, and some neighborhoods are being expanded with brand-new housing. Check which of those projects are actually selling, and at what stage, before you plan a move around one.
A whole new quarter, Rova Gilboa (רובע גלבוע), is planned in south-west Afula, east of Road 65. Its plan, TML/1056, covers about 2,513 dunam and about 7,800 homes of different types, with land for schools and public buildings, open spaces and a city park by the Gilboa stream. In January 2026 the Israel Land Authority announced the winners of its tender for six compounds of apartment buildings there, 408 homes in all. The tender drew 28 bids, and the winners will pay about NIS 49.5 million for the land, not counting VAT and development costs. A land sale comes before building permits and construction, so ask the developer for the permit status and the delivery date before you count on a flat in Rova Gilboa. Our guide to Israel Land Authority tenders explains how these land sales work.
Getting around
By car, the profile puts Afula about 30 minutes from Tiberias, 40 minutes from Haifa, 55 minutes from Tzfat and Meron, 30 minutes from the Yokneam high-tech area and about an hour and a half from Jerusalem. Those times depend on traffic and on where in the city you live, so run the route from the actual address. Local bus lines connect the neighborhoods and there's a bus service to Jerusalem, but frequency changes through the day, so check the current timetable in a journey planner such as Moovit before you count on a commute.
Hospital and health funds
Emek Medical Center, the Clalit hospital that serves northeastern Israel, is within walking distance of Givat HaMoreh and Afula Illit and inside the eruv that connects them. Eruv boundaries change, so confirm with the local rabbinate. All four health funds (Clalit, Maccabi, Meuhedet and Leumit) have branches in Afula, as the clinic count above shows. Our page on medical issues during aliyah covers health fund basics for new immigrants.
Schools and Torah learning
The 2024 profile lists several Haredi schools in Afula that are used to teaching olim children: boys' chadarim, two Bais Yaakov girls' schools, three yeshiva ketanas for high-school-age boys, and a girls' high school, a branch of Chadash in Jerusalem, that offers the "chutzim" exams as an alternative to the bagrut (בגרות) matriculation exams. Schools in Kfar Gidon, about a 10-minute drive away, offer smaller classes and extra help for olim, and the girls' high school there follows the bagrut track. There are several kollels, including an English-speaking kollel in Afula Illit. Programs, olim support hours and staff change from year to year, so confirm directly with each school before you choose a neighborhood. Our guide to the Israel education system explains how the school streams fit together.
