Living around Kikar HaMedina
The New North around Kikar HaMedina (הצפון החדש סביבת כיכר המדינה) is a quiet, central part of north Tel Aviv. Madlan's neighbourhood profile draws it between Namir Road to the east, Ibn Gabirol Street to the west, Pinkas Street to the north and Arlozorov Street to the south, and describes lots of small gardens, good schools and very good public transport. Most of the buildings are old, which is why developers have moved in: the same profile lists a good number of new buildings going up on its side streets. Getting around is easy. Madlan places the area close to the light rail and the Israel Railways line, rates it among the busiest neighbourhoods in Israel for bus traffic, and notes quick car access to the Ayalon highway and Namir Road. Two more light rail lines are being built along its edges. According to the NTA, the company building the network, the Purple Line runs along Arlozorov Street and the Green Line along Ibn Gabirol Street, and the two meet at an interchange at Ibn Gabirol and Arlozorov, on the area's south-west corner. Both are still under construction, so check NTA's current schedule before you count on an opening date. Our light rail guide covers how the lines affect prices.
There isn't much street retail inside the area, but every part of it is a walk from Ibn Gabirol, Yehuda HaMaccabi Street, the G Tzameret mall, Arlozorov, the Weizmann mall and the luxury shops around Kikar HaMedina itself. Post offices, banks, clinics, pharmacies and Ichilov hospital are close by. The bars along Ibn Gabirol can be noisy until late at night, so if you're looking at a flat on or just off it, go back in the evening before you decide.
